CHAPTER TWELVE

When the United Nations voted in favor of dividing Palestine, and by doing so approved the establishment of a Jewish state, Michael Gordon was a regular freshman at the University of California at Berkeley. His aspiration was to major in the studies of social sciences. He hoped that someday he could improve the social conditions among the poor populations, as well as for the minorities and blacks living in his area. Likewise, he was interested in the rehabilitation of criminals and young juvenile delinquents doing their time in the prison system. He hoped to improve their conditions. He believed that with the right approach, and with the careful planning of the rehabilitation activities, the system might be able to help certain felons and put them back on the right track.

This mighty and ancient passion to settle in the land of the forefathers, to restore and cultivate it, a desire that had been burning for generations, would finally be fully realized.

Michael, who participated with his family members in this moment of the birth of the Jewish state, felt for the first time a strong inner urge to immigrate to that country. He wanted to take part in what was happening there—to breathe, to smell, to touch, to feel, and to be a part of the defense forces of the newly born state.

Right after the declaration at the United Nations, the Arabs switched from talking and threatening to actions. They launched inclusive terrorist attacks, with the Jews retaliating upon their attacks and trying to eliminate the terrorist groups.

Michael Gordon has never voiced his emotions aloud before his family members. He kept his thoughts to himself in all that concerned the Jewish nation and its existence. In his heart he knew that sooner or
